YOUTUBE GHOST
Case Study
PRODUCT: YouTube Ghost – Simplified Private Viewing Toggle
PRODUCT GOAL: Enable users to effortlessly toggle private mode directly from the YouTube interface for quick, convenient, and hassle-free private viewing.
MY ROLE: Product Manager — led concept ideation, user research, and prototype development for YouTube Ghost, a feature enabling quick and easy private mode toggling on YouTube.
Note: This is a conceptual project created independently as part of my product management portfolio. It is not affiliated with YouTube.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
YouTube Ghost adds a quick and easy way to turn private mode on or off, right from the main screen. Instead of digging through the settings, users can pause their watch history with a single click. This helps keep one-off or sensitive searches from affecting future recommendations while keeping the overall experience smooth and familiar.
This is a self-directed case study aimed at improving user privacy and control, without compromising usability.
PROBLEM
YouTube already has a way to pause watch history, but it’s buried in settings where most users rarely go. For quick, one-off searches like something embarrassing, sensitive, or just out of character, there’s no easy way to prevent that from affecting future recommendations.
Incognito mode exists, but it’s not ideal for users who are logged in for benefits like Premium access, ad-free viewing, or synced playlists. Logging out or switching accounts also adds unnecessary friction.
What’s missing is a simple and visible way to toggle private viewing without interrupting the experience or digging through menus.
USER SCENARIOS
To better understand the need for YouTube Ghost Mode, here are some common situations where users would benefit from a quick private mode toggle:
Personal or Embarrassing Searches: A user wants to look up something sensitive or private without it showing up in their watch or search history, avoiding future recommendations related to it.
One-Off Sensitive Videos: A viewer needs to watch a video that doesn’t reflect their usual interests and doesn’t want it to influence their recommended videos.
Shared Accounts: A parent uses their child’s account to search for cartoons. Without a private mode, this skews recommendations away from their typical preferences.
Exploring Controversial Content: A user wishes to explore topics that might be sensitive or controversial without the algorithm “judging” them or adjusting their feed based on that behavior.
These scenarios show how users need a fast, easy way to pause watch history and maintain a personalized yet private viewing experience.
MY CONTRIBUTIONS
I led the product thinking for this concept from identifying the user pain point to designing a simple, intuitive solution. I explored how users behave when watching something they don’t want saved, defined the product goal, and built a clickable prototype to show how a quick private mode toggle could improve the experience without disrupting how people normally use YouTube.
RESEARCH & TARGET AUDIENCE
This concept started with a core assumption:
Users want a faster, more convenient way to temporarily watch privately without disrupting their logged-in YouTube experience.
I explored how YouTube currently handles this. While users can pause watch history, the option is buried deep in settings. Incognito or Private mode exists in browsers, but it logs users out, removing Premium features, synced playlists, and personalized content.
To validate the idea, I reviewed existing user conversations and used AI-assisted analysis to quickly scan community discussions and surface recurring themes. One Reddit thread, though focused on YouTube Music, captures a similar pain point where the user wants a quick toggle to pause watch history without friction. (See screenshot below.)
This reinforced the relevance of the problem and helped clarify the audience:
Logged-in YouTube users who value personalization but occasionally want privacy
Premium users who don’t want to lose ad-free or synced access
Users exploring out-of-character or sensitive topics
Parents or shared-account users temporarily watching unrelated content
PROPOSED SOLUTION
YouTube Ghost introduces a simple, intuitive way to toggle private viewing directly from the YouTube interface. A small ghost icon appears on the main screen. When clicked, it instantly pauses watch and search history without disrupting the logged-in experience.
No more digging through settings or switching accounts. Users can enjoy the benefits of Premium, keep their playlists synced, and explore sensitive or one-off topics without those moments impacting their recommendations.
The feature is designed to feel lightweight and familiar, reducing friction while giving users more control over their privacy.
PROTOTYPE
Here’s a simple click-through prototype showing how YouTube Ghost works. The focus was on keeping the experience familiar while adding a quick and visible way to pause watch history. Users can toggle between normal and private mode using the ghost icon, without leaving the main screen or losing logged-in features.
HOW I’D MEASURE SUCCESS
To evaluate the impact of this feature, I’d track both behavioral and the sentiment-based metrics:
Engagement with the Ghost Toggle
Track how often users activate or deactivate private mode from the main screen.Reduction in “manual” privacy workarounds
Fewer users needing to switch accounts or go incognito could indicate the toggle is solving a real pain point.Retention of logged-in users during private viewing
Measure if more users stay logged in (and keep Premium benefits) when watching sensitive or off-brand content.User feedback and satisfaction
Collect qualitative feedback through surveys or usability tests to gauge how helpful and intuitive the feature feels.Impact on recommendation quality
Analyze if users report better content personalization by avoiding unwanted history pollution.
IMPACT & REFLECTION
This prototype highlights a simple yet valuable improvement to the YouTube experience by making private viewing quick and accessible without disrupting users’ logged-in benefits. By focusing on ease of access, the feature addresses a real user pain point confirmed through research and existing user conversations.
Reflecting on the process, balancing simplicity with clarity was key. While the prototype is basic, it effectively demonstrates the concept and user flow. If given more time, adding micro-interactions and user testing would further refine usability and validate assumptions.
Overall, this project reinforced the importance of designing solutions that fit naturally into users’ existing habits, reducing friction while respecting their needs for privacy and personalization.
CONCLUSION
YouTube Ghost Mode offers a quick and convenient way for users to toggle private viewing without losing access to personalized features. By addressing a common frustration with existing settings, this solution improves user control and enhances the overall YouTube experience.
This project showcases how thoughtful design can simplify complex settings, making privacy more accessible to everyday users.
